With the movement towards electronic health records becoming an increasing priority for health-care organizations across the country, Whitby Mental Health Centre (WMHC) is preparing for the implementation of Meditech’s windows-based version 6.0. The new system will improve patient safety and enhance quality of care, while providing applied data for learning and research opportunities.

The first inquiry-based phase of the secure and private health record system is expected to be accessible to authorized care providers across the hospital by fall 2010.

WMHC is the first hospital in Canada to implement this new version, which allows all records to be tracked at the click of a mouse from patient admission and throughout the recovery process. Capturing medication information, clinical documentation, lab and radiology results, the need for searching through paper-based records will be eliminated.

The implementation of electronic health records will improve access to care, enhance patient safety and increase efficiency of service for our patients. Whitby Mental Health Centre staff will be able to easily access patient health information in a safe and confidential manner and utilize the information to enhance their clinical diagnosis and treatment plans.

Jane Miles, WMHC nurse practitioner, is excited for the launch of this new advancement in technology and mental health care. “The implementation of electronic health records will allow all members of a treatment team to access information more efficiently and increase accuracy of information,” says Miles. “Data entered will be accessible through all parts of the record, ensuring all disciplines are working together, eliminating the need to repeat documentation.”

WMHC’s partnership with Meditech for the development of this innovative system is driven by the organization’s strategy to improve quality through accuracy of documentation and efficiency of treatment, while building a practical tool that provides real data and statistical information for its learning and research initiatives.

“We look forward to our partnership with Meditech and working together to transform the safe and enhanced delivery of health care,” says Karim Mamdani, Vice-President, Corporate Services at WMHC. “Meditech offers a fully integrated and cost effective solution, provides robust and seamless integration to support our clinical practice and provides standards and configurable functionalities to support workflow.”

Enhanced patient care, improved interpretation of diagnostic and laboratory results, increased speed and accuracy in retrieving critical patient history and elimination of the need to repeat certain procedures are just some of the many benefits.
