Breaking Ground on Canada’s Largest Hospital

Published on

Trillium Health Partners and the Ontario Government recently marked a historic milestone by breaking ground on The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital and Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children – Ontario’s first hospital dedicated to the specialized needs of women and children. The design triples the size of the existing Mississauga Hospital to meet the needs of one of the country’s most diverse and rapidly growing
communities. Already one of the busiest hospitals in Canada, Trillium Health Partners is projected to face more demand for health care than any other Ontario hospital over the next 20 years.

“The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital and Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children will serve as specialized hubs of cutting-edge care that is digitally connected to the community – from primary care to clinics and long-term care – to put people at the centre,” said Karli Farrow, President and CEO of Trillium Health Partners. “Today’s groundbreaking is a testament to what’s possible when government, donors, and community come together with a shared vision for the future. We are deeply grateful to the Government of Ontario, the City of Mississauga, our generous donors, Team THP, our many partners, and the entire community who are helping us build a new era of health care.”

Designed to extend beyond traditional hospital walls, Trillium Health Partners’ future model of care will integrate digital technology, data analytics, advanced medical technology, and community insights to deliver more proactive, personalized, and coordinated care. Ongoing engagement with clinical providers, patients, and community members has shaped the hospital’s design to improve the patient and provider experience while maximizing efficiency and cost effectiveness. Cost reductions include the removal of non-clinical spaces, the use of an existing property to avoid acquiring new land, and standardization of patient rooms and surgical suites to lower costs and improve future adaptability.

“Our government’s investment in the Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital is an important part of our more than $200- billion plan to build and protect Ontario,” said Premier Doug Ford. “Today’s groundbreaking means more beds, more doctors and more nurses right here in Mississauga. It also means good-paying jobs today, and a stronger health-care
system for decades to come.”

This project uses a progressive public-private partnership (P3) approach, with ED+PCL Healthcare Partners working collaboratively with Infrastructure Ontario (IO), Trillium Health Partners, and the Ministry of Health to deliver a modern, efficient hospital that meets the highest standards of patient care while minimizing costs. With preconstruction activities
well underway, the site is anticipated to reach substantial completion by 2033, with hospital operations expected to transition into the facility in 2034.

The new hospital is also expected to bolster the local economy and strengthen Mississauga’s position as a leader in attracting and retaining business investment. Combined with the expansion at the future home of The Gilgan Family Queensway Health Centre, these projects will attract 2,400 new health care professionals and over 400 new doctors adding an estimated $1 billion or more to Mississauga’s local economy over 10 years.
