In 2016, Jennifer Sabalboro arrived in Toronto not as a nurse, but as a live-in caregiver for a post-stroke elderly patient—quietly carrying with her a dream that seemed distant, uncertain, and filled with obstacles. Like many internationally educated nurses, she faced the painful reality of stepping away from her professional identity. Yet, rather than allowing circumstances to define her, Jennifer chose to redefine her path through courage, resilience, and unwavering determination.

With deep self-reflection and clarity of purpose, she pursued nursing registration in Canada, navigating the complex and often overwhelming processes of the National Nursing Assessment Service and the College of Nurses of Ontario. The journey was far from easy. Financial constraints, systemic barriers, and the emotional toll of starting over tested her limits. Still, within a year, she achieved her Registered Practical Nurse designation—an early testament to her perseverance.

Jennifer’s challenges did not end there. During her job search, she encountered a common but discouraging barrier: the demand for “Canadian experience.” Rather than accepting this limitation, she courageously advocated for herself and for others, confidently engaging with employers and emphasizing that Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) deserve equitable opportunities to demonstrate their competence. Her voice became not only her own—but a voice for many.

At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, while the healthcare system faced unprecedented strain, Jennifer worked two to three jobs simultaneously while completing her requirements to become a Registered Nurse. Amid exhaustion and uncertainty, she remained steadfast in her purpose—to contribute meaningfully to patient care during one of the most critical periods in modern healthcare. The province’s nursing shortage and her deep commitment to patient safety became powerful motivators that pushed her forward.

Her pursuit of excellence led her to further her education, including completing a Community Health Nursing course at St. Francis Xavier University. She went on to earn her Registered Nurse designation and completed the Perioperative Nursing Program with Honours at Centennial College through Sunnybrook’s Operating Room Education Sponsorship. She is now a certified Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) provider and a trusted preceptor to new hires and nursing students from various universities and colleges across Ontario.

As an operating room nurse at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Jennifer exemplifies clinical excellence and compassionate care in one of the most high-stakes environments in healthcare. She plays a critical role in ensuring that every surgical procedure is conducted safely and efficiently—preparing instruments, maintaining strict aseptic technique, monitoring patients’ conditions, and advocating for patient safety at every stage. Beyond her technical expertise, she provides reassurance to patients and families during vulnerable moments, ensuring that care remains deeply human and patient-centered.

Jennifer’s impact extends far beyond direct patient care. As a preceptor, she consistently demonstrates exceptional expertise and dedication to teaching. She transforms complex clinical concepts into meaningful, hands-on learning experiences, fostering both competence and confidence among new staff and students. Her mentorship does more than teach skills—it shapes professional identity, strengthens critical thinking, and elevates the overall standard of care within her unit.

Her unwavering commitment to patient safety and best practices defines her professional identity. Jennifer upholds meticulous attention to detail and strict adherence to evidence-based protocols, recognizing that even the smallest actions in the operating room can have life-altering consequences. Her dedication to excellence has contributed significantly to improved patient outcomes, operational efficiency, and a culture of accountability within her team.

Equally remarkable is her ability to foster collaboration and unity. Jennifer is widely respected for her professionalism, integrity, and ability to work seamlessly within interdisciplinary teams. In high-pressure environments, she remains composed, solution-focused, and supportive—strengthening both team performance and morale. She embodies the values of respect, compassion, and shared responsibility in healthcare.

Beyond the hospital walls, Jennifer’s influence becomes even more profound. She is a passionate advocate for Internationally Educated Nurses, dedicating countless hours to mentoring those who face the same challenges she once overcame. As an active leader in the Integrated Filipino Canadian Nurses Association, she served as Director of Education and Training from 2022 to 2025 and currently holds the role of Co-Chair of the Clinical Enhancement Program.

Through one-on-one mentorship, educational sessions, and hands-on guidance, Jennifer has supported countless IENs across Canada and around the world. She provides clarity in a process often filled with confusion—guiding applicants through credential assessments, licensure requirements, exam preparation, and job readiness. More importantly, she restores hope. For many nurses navigating uncertainty, Jennifer becomes a steady and trusted guide.

Her mentorship is deeply personal and transformative. She empowers others to believe in themselves, persevere through setbacks, and embrace their full potential. Rooted in the Filipino value of bayanihan, her work reflects a spirit of collective upliftment—ensuring that no one is left behind. Many IENs describe her as more than a mentor: she is a life coach, an advocate, and a source of inspiration.

Her impact extends across provinces—including Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland and Labrador—and internationally to nurses from the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and the United Kingdom. Through both virtual and in-person initiatives, she equips nurses with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to succeed in their licensure journey and professional integration.

Even during one of the most demanding seasons of her life—as a new mother currently on maternity leave—Jennifer continues to serve others with unwavering dedication. She responds to inquiries, offers guidance, and ensures that aspiring nurses feel supported at every step. Her ability to balance personal responsibilities with a deep commitment to service speaks volumes about her character and purpose.

Jennifer’s contributions have been formally recognized through numerous distinctions, including being named IFCNA IEN of the Year (RN Category), receiving commendations from the Office of the Associate Minister of Health, and being recognized as a finalist for the Golden Balangay Awards – Pinoy of the Year. Yet beyond accolades, her true measure of success lies in the lives she has transformed—patients who received safe and compassionate care, and nurses who found direction, confidence, and renewed purpose through her mentorship.

In leadership, Jennifer leads not by title, but by example. She steps forward in moments of uncertainty, advocates when others hesitate, and uplifts those who are often overlooked. Her influence extends beyond her unit, shaping a culture of inclusivity, excellence, and empowerment within the nursing profession.

In innovation, she has redefined mentorship for internationally educated nurses by creating accessible, practical, and deeply human approaches to guidance. Through personalized coaching, structured education, and real-world preparation strategies, she has transformed a complex and often discouraging process into one that is clearer, more attainable, and filled with hope.

In impact, her work transcends borders. From operating rooms to global mentorship platforms, Jennifer has changed the trajectory of countless lives. Each nurse she supports becomes part of a ripple effect—strengthening healthcare systems, improving patient care, and inspiring others to persevere.

At the heart of her journey is a profound sense of purpose grounded in compassion, resilience, and service. She embodies the true spirit of bayanihan—lifting others so they, too, can rise.

Jennifer Sabalboro is more than a Nursing Hero—she is a force of transformation in healthcare, a champion for equity and opportunity, and a guiding light for those striving to turn adversity into achievement. Her legacy is not only defined by what she has accomplished, but by the countless others she has empowered to succeed.
