St. Joseph’s Centre for Mountain Health Services is Growing

Planning is currently underway for the transfer of 22 acute mental health beds from Hamilton Health Sciences, McMaster campus to St. Joseph’s Healthcare Centre for Mountain Health Services. Construction of the new unit is moving forward for the April 1, 2004 transfer date.

Staff and physicians from 4X, the unit being transferred, were welcomed to CMHS on Monday, December 15th and given a tour of the redeveloping A2 unit. This ‘tour and tea’ event provided an opportunity for staff at CMHS to meet with some of their potential colleagues in addition to showing support for the transfer. “We are hoping the new staff from 4X will bring innovative ideas to our mental health program,” says Winnie Doyle, VP Mental Health.

Additionally, Dr. Richard Swinson, Chief, Department of Psychiatry is also excited about the transfer. “This will bring opportunities for research across the units, situating our mental health program to be at the forefront of psychiatric developments.”

Upon completion of St. Joseph’s Healthcare’s 10-storey tower in 2005, these 22 beds will be moved to the 9th and 10th floors of the new building.
