Improved treatment for patients with kidney failure

Hospital News August 24, 2023 9:24 am

Over two million people worldwide depend on dialysis or a kidney transplant, according to the National Kidney Foundation. Using the Canadian Light Source (CLS), researchers have developed a better membrane for dialysis machines that could lead to safer treatment and improved quality of life for patients with kidney failure. Some of the commercial membranes currently in use contain heparin, a medicine that reduces blood clots; however, they also have an intense negative charge on their surface that causes serious side effects. The new membrane not only reduces blood clotting but also has a neutral surface that is biocompatible and should lead to improved outcomes for patients. Read the full story online at ...

Multi-thermal Aspects of the Wound Dressing

Hospital News June 5, 2023 9:47 am

The video demonstrates the multi-thermal aspects of the wound dressing. It demonstrates that the wound dressing only adheres when it is applied at body temperature. The beginning of the video shows that at the refrigerated temperature (when it’s best to load it with drugs) the smart material doesn’t stick to the pig skin.
The second demo shows that when the pig skin is at room temperature it also doesn’t adhere, that’s also when it’s best to easily remove it, it painlessly falls off. Lastly, using his arm at body temperature demonstrates that the wound dressing easily adheres to the skin.

Kelly Montgomery Custodial services Manager for Clackamas Community College in Oregon City, talks about his experience using Optisolve. And how much of an improvement he has seen in his staff, the level of clean and the savings he has achieved using Optisolve's Precision cleaning technology system.Transcript:
My name is Kelly Montgomery and I am the Custodial services manager here at Clackamas Community College. This is one of the Optisolve tools, and it is AMAZING. It helps us see the surface that we don’t get to see with our eyes.We have 27 buildings, roughly 750,000 square feet of cleanable square footage and we clean it with 17 full time staff.Prior to Optisolve we were doing a lot of black light inspections and some ATP metering. Before we weren’t getting the desired results. Now we’re using Optisolve about twice a week. We’re inspecting more often, we’re getting better results, we’re getting better data, and my staff has improved night and day.The value that Optisolve has brought to my campus has been almost immeasurable. We are actually dealing with photos versus numbers . And photos are indisputable. We can physically show, okay well in this classroom, on this table surface or on this door knob, you didn’t do a good job. It positively impacts my staff because I can easily show them where they are improving. We can go back and, and look at the SAVI reports and say “Hey back in may, seems like you struggled on these surfaces. Well now it’s october and you’re doing a great job”Some of the learnings that I have got from using the Pathfinder tool is different areas that maybe weren’t being cleaned properly. We started testing the tops of desks, and then one day I said, “Well let's look at the edges because those are also a touch point. People use them to get up. And low and behold they weren't being cleaned, they weren’t being disinfected. And they light up like a christmas tree. That was a very teachable moment for my staff. It is something that they are very aware of. No touch point is left behind. So prior to using the SAVI system we, we had a lot of paper records. And that's pretty wasteful. By transitioning to the SAVI tool we are saving about 25% in paper costs. It’s data that we can access whenever we need it, without looking for a piece pf paper.I love the Pathfinder tool because it allows us to take photos of the surface, we get to see that not only is the surface visually clean, but it is actually clean underneath. We get to make sure that there is no bacteria left behind. We get to see that, it really just helps us validate our cleaning. We are getting about a 33% return on investment on time I was spending training staff. I get to actually do more of the administrator work, and less time spending training staff. We have been able to actually have a lot of employee improvement with Optisolve. They are actually taking the data that they’re getting from Optisolve and they are self correcting. It’s been kind of like amazing. They actually get to see where they’re deficient in their cleaning and apply that to their daily routine. Each inspection software that you use is a little different. And the Optisolve way was a little different for us as well, but better. Working with the Optisolve team has been great. They’re responsive, anything that we need, we hear back almost immediately. Onboarding was great. Any questions that I had they answered immediately. I couldn’t recommend a team more. This has been the best experience that I’ve had using any custodial product.Do you want to actually see where you’re deficient? Optisolve is, is the way to get there. It’s the only way in our entire industry to get there. Like you can actually see the clean. It’s crazy!Book a demo today at: www.optisolve.net

The Overlooked Issue of Shingles Infections in Older Canadians & How to Address It!

Hospital News June 13, 2022 2:39 pm

Despite potentially serious health outcomes, shingles remains an overlooked issue in Canada, particularly for older adults. Canada’s National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) recommends that all adults aged 50 years and older be offered the recombinant zoster vaccine to provide protection against shingles, unless there are contraindications. Despite this recommendation, only 27% of Canadians in this age cohort reported having received a shingles vaccine, with rates varying considerably across Canada’s provinces and territories.

Learn from leading experts Dr. Samir Sinha, Director of Health Policy Research, National Institute on Ageing; Dr. Vivien Brown, Family Physician and Author; and Dr. Allison McGeer, Microbiologist and Infectious Disease Consultant at Mount Sinai Hospital, on the health implications of shingles for older adults, effective prevention measures, and evidence-informed policy recommendations and practice approaches.
